Description

This is a virus detection. Viruses are programs that self-replicate recursively, meaning that infected systems spread the virus to other systems, which then propagate the virus further. While many viruses contain a destructive payload, it's quite common for viruses to do nothing more than spread from one system to another.

Indication of Infection

Increase in size of infected files by 10,262 bytes.

On July 14th, infected systems may be unable to boot and/or display a message box with the following detail:

Virus Warning!

Seems like your bad dream comes true

Methods of Infection

Aliases

Smash, W95/Smash.10262, Win95.Smash.10262

Virus Characteristics

Update - July 13, 2000:
This virus is not known to be in the wild at this time. AVERT has learned that some news reports are warning of this virus due to the date activation payload. AVERT Director Vincent Gullotto expresses that AVERT sees this as "more CAI/media hype".

This is a 32bit PE file virus. This virus will infect all files of PE type on the local system. This virus has a date activated payload which may damage the boot file IO.SYS. Infected systems may also experience a format of their hard drive.

All Users :
