Description

This is a virus detection. Viruses are programs that self-replicate recursively, meaning that infected systems spread the virus to other systems, which then propagate the virus further. While many viruses contain a destructive payload, it's quite common for viruses to do nothing more than spread from one system to another.

Indication of Infection

This virus triggers on the 31st of August. On this date any documents opened on an infected system will display the message:

A CURSE FROM BLACKROSE TO SOMEONE HE HATES

"HIJADIPUTA KANG HAYUP KA!
BURAY MO, SAKA BURAY NI INA MO! HAYUP KA!
SAYANG KA, HAYUP KA!
HAYUP KA TALAGA!"

In addition, access to the original data in the document is denied. Also, in the document properties the Title is set to "BLACKCURSE" and the Author to "BLACKROSE"

Methods of Infection

When an infected file is opened the virus places itself in the global template (normal.dot). Once the global template is infected, all documents subsequently opened on the system will become infected.

Virus Characteristics

This virus propagates by infecting Word Documents in Microsoft Word97 or higher. The virus consists of a macro "BLACKCURSE". When an infected document is opened the virus performs the following tasks:

- Disable Word's macro protection
- Disable the "Tools|Macro" menu
- Disable the Alt+F8 and Alt+F11 shortcut keys
- Disable the "Macro|Security" menu in Word2000

Use current engine and DAT files for detection and removal.

It is very common for macro viruses to disable options within Office applications for example in Word, the macro protection warning commonly is disabled. After cleaning macro viruses, ensure that your previously set options are again enabled.

AVERT Recommended Updates:

* Office 2000 updates

* Malformed Word Document Could Enable Macro to Run Automatically (Information/Patch)
