Description

This is a virus detection. Viruses are programs that self-replicate recursively, meaning that infected systems spread the virus to other systems, which then propagate the virus further. While many viruses contain a destructive payload, it's quite common for viruses to do nothing more than spread from one system to another.

Indication of Infection

On an infected system the virus emulates the TOOLS|MACRO functionality. Warning: It is important not to use this command, as you will execute the viral code. When using the TOOLS|MACRO command the virus will emulate the MessageBox that is normally displayed, but if the user selects any of the options a MessageBox like

- WordBasic Err = 7 X

Not enough memory

OK

is displayed.

When using the FILE|EXIT command on the 12th of any month a MessageBox like

- Envader X

It shall arive . . .

OK

is displayed. When using the FILE|EXIT command on the 13th day of any month it will try to drop a bitmap file 'wp.bmp' to C:\.

The virus will only replicate when the Menu commands for FILE|CLOSE and FILE|EXIT are used.

Methods of Infection

General Macro Virus Information

Virus Characteristics

This virus to propagates by infecting Word Documents in Microsoft WORD Versions 6.x / 7.x on Windows and Macintosh platforms. The virus consists of these macros:

AUTOEXEC, FILESAVEAS, FILEOPEN, FILECLOSE, FILEEXIT, TOOLSMACRO

in an infected document. The virus becomes active by using Auto- and SystemMacros. All macros are encrypted using the standard Word execute-only feature. Meaning that the user is unable to edit or view the macro code.
