Iraq War Vet Learns the Hard Way When it Comes to PC Protection

“McAfee is really on top of their game…They are 100 percent committed”

As a former Marine with three tours in Iraq, Jake Nelson knows the importance of integrity and reliability. Now, as a full-time college student, Jake demands the same dependability in his laptop security solution. That’s why he uses McAfee® VirusScan® Plus.

Jake has used anti-virus software ever since he got a high-speed Internet connection. “With a dial-up connection, it wasn’t as much of a concern for me at the time since I controlled where and when I connected,” Jake explained. “But with a cable Internet connection that is always on, I’m at risk 24/7 for information theft, viruses, worms, and Trojan horses if I don’t have strong PC security.”

“I learned the hard way,” Jake continued. “When I lived in the barracks, I didn’t have anti-virus software on my computer, and a virus wiped out my hard drive. I had to reinstall Windows® and start all over again. It was a mess! Since installing McAfee VirusScan Plus, though, that has never happened again.”

Jake started with a competitor’s security product, but quickly switched to McAfee because of great customer reviews and the software’s intuitive design. He has been a loyal customer ever since. “I can tell you firsthand that everything people said about McAfee was true!”

Whether abroad or in the U.S., Jake is constantly online. “The Internet is very important to me,” Jake said. “When I was in Iraq, I stayed in touch by email constantly with people back home. We had computers with satellite Internet connections during my last two deployments. The troops there are well connected to the web. Now that my military service is over and I’m in college in southern California, I use the Internet to shop for school books, do research for my classes, and take care of my banking.”

Jake’s biggest concern is spyware, since it can be downloaded so easily—without warning—from unsecured commercial web sites. “Most big retailers and banks have some level of protection for online customers,” Jake explained, “but that’s just not enough for me. I must have a strong anti-virus scanner on my computer to be sure my information is protected. It’s critical, and that’s why I use McAfee.”

“McAfee is really on top of their game,” Jake said. “Even when an especially devious virus comes out that uses a lot of tricks to make its way onto peoples’ systems, McAfee has deployed a solution within a couple of hours. I especially like that their chat support walks me though any fixes I need to take care of the problem. They are 100% committed.”

Jake likes that everything in McAfee VirusScan Plus is self-contained and always working. “It notifies me if there’s a problem. That’s great because I’m too busy to spend a lot of time maintaining anything myself. I don’t even have to think about it,” he said. He values the simplicity of his yearly subscription and the fact that McAfee protects his personal information every time he turns on his laptop.

In the near future, Jake sees convergence as the biggest security challenge. “It’s a common concern. Computers are such an integral part of our lives now. My television, Internet, phone… they’re all starting to run off of the same backbone—fiber optic, web-focused connections. The elements are different, but if something attacks the Internet, everything is affected. That’s where the challenge is, and that will be a future focus for security companies and hackers alike.”

The risks may change, but Jake’s plan remains the same. “I’ll stick with McAfee,” he concluded. “It’s the best, and I highly recommend it!”
